History

The Peter Luger chain has its start as the Carl Luger’s Café, Billiards and Bowling Alley, which opened in 1887 and which became a favorite spot in the neighborhood. Peter Luger owned the restaurant and Carl Luger, his nephew, was in charge of the kitchen.

Sol Forman, who established Forman Family in 1920 along with his siblings, was one of the regular customers who was also fond of taking his business associates to the place. But when Peter Luger died, the restaurant fell into disrepair and went into auction where Forman was the sole bidder.

Today, Peter Luger Steakhouse is still owned and operated by Forman Family.
