History

Ed Plummer and Sherwood Johnson opened the first Shakey’s Pizza on 30 April 1954 in Sacramento, California. The name was derived from Johnson’s nickname – Shakey’s – which was the result of nerve damage from malaria. The company is also notable as the first-ever franchise pizza chain in the country.

The chain has more than 500 locations worldwide but only about 60 of them are in the United States. This means that the chain may be born in America but its presence is felt more strongly overseas.
